an original poem by Helena Noel
Thy steadily rocking arms with sleeping child,
Thy peaceful contemplation of His face,
The filial love for thee in sleepy smiles
Contents the heart of humble maid of grace.
This bundle, borne by thee, bears all the world;
An infant's newness holds eternity.
But should this child's wrappings be unfurled
An infant wouldst thou be compared to He!
Thou knowest this, and humbly cherish all.
But must thou cradle closely to thy chest?
Or might we coax a glimpse to share thine awe,
And kiss the sleeping head upon thy breast?
O mother mild, share with us one thing:
To glimpse this babe divine, our newborn King.
